Five Dutch Rock bands that could make it big!

September 11, 2009 at 5:23 pm (Music) (, , , )

De Staat

de staat
De Staat (Dutch for “The State”) has made their mark on the musical year of 2009. Playing almost everywhere in the Netherlands including the festivals of Pinkpop and Lowlands. Internationally they could be on the verge of a breakthrough as well, recently playing the Sziget festival in Hungary and next year they will play the Glastonbury festival.
De Staat plays a raw edged alternative style similar to that of bands like Queens of the stone Age and Dinosaur Jr. with a touch of poppy awareness. A great band overall!

Elle Bandita

ella bandita
Elle Bandita is Britney Spears in a backwards universe. This rockchick from The Hague screams, sings, shouts and plays the guitar like she is stark raving mad, but it works and the amazing post-grunge style she and her band perform puts a smile on your face. Singer Elle was discovered by Golden Earring frontman Barry Hay and was originally in the band Bad Candy. With the Ella Bandita project she finally got some mainstream attention in the Netherlands and hopefully will be an international success as well.

Drive Like Maria

drive like maria
Drive Like Maria is a Dutch/Belgian band that already got some international attention. The band came in second at the Global Battle of the Bands in Mexico and played as a support act for ZZ Top and AC/DC. The music can best be described as Stonerrock. Drive Like Maria is an energetic band so if you have the chance to check them out make sure to do so. You won’t regret it!

Stud Muffins

Stud Muffins 3
The Stud Muffins hold a special place in my heart. I have seen their first ever gig and know some of the band members personally. Now I now a lot of bands personally but Stud Muffins wouldn’t be on this list if they weren’t very good as well. The band plays a poppy rock style and charms the audience at every show with their fresh performance. Besides being nice guys the band has a feel for catchy tunes and it’s only a matter of time until they hit the charts. Let it Burn!

The Death Letters

Listen to their songs and close your eyes. Now think of the fact that this band consists of only two musicians who aren’t even 18 years old. Pretty impressive ey? The Death Letters is the revelation of 2009 for Dutch rock and alternative aficionados. The two teenagers show a tremendous understanding of classic hard rock and blues while still maintaining their own style. The Netherlands has been conquered, Europe is next and North America can’t be too far behind.

Top 7 rarely seen Simpsons characters

September 3, 2009 at 12:17 pm (Simpsons, Top lists)

I really love The Simpsons, it comes close to obsession to be honest. I own almost all the collectors edition box sets and I have watched them all at least 3 times. So yeah you can say I am a fan. A big part of this comes from the fact that the Simpsons universe is huge with a lot of different characters all with their own story and personality. Ofcourse everybody loves how stupid Homer his and we all wish we could’ve been more like Bart when we grew up. Even characters like Moe the Bartender and Chief Wiggum are fairly regular and beloved but this list goes one step further. These are the characters you hardly ever see but are still great!

7. Grandpa Lovejoy

Wow it is impossible to find an image of this guy on the interwebs. The father of Reverend Timothy Lovejoy makes only one appearance in the entire show but what an appearance it is; Inside a burlesque house enjoying himself with two dancers. Awesome!
Appearances: 1 (Bart After Dark)

6. Baby Gerald

baby gerald unibrow
Baby Gerald is the arch enemy of Maggie Simpson. The unibrowed baby has the meanest look you’ve ever seen from a baby but other then that doesn’t really do anything on camera. It was once revelealed that Gerald causes a lot of mischief in the town but it is never shown.
In the “Bart in the Future” it is made clear that Maggie and Gerald stopped being enemies and even got married.
In the new Simpsons intro Gerald also makes a quick cameo.
Appearences: 6 (Sweet Seymour Skinner’s Badaaaaaassss Song, Lady Bouvier’s Lover, The Canine Mutiny, The Joy of Sect, Last Tap Dance in Springfield, Marge vs. Singles, Seniors, Childless Couples, Teens and Gays )

5. The Very Tall Man

very tall man
Modeled after Simpsons writer Ian Maxtone-Graham, the Very Tall Man is in fact a very tall man. He drives a Volkswagen Beetle which of course makes his appearance in the car hilarious. He marched Nelson (ha-ha) down the main street of Springfield with his pants pulled down for laughing at him once and was also seen taking the coach to New York City. All in all a rarely seen character you wouldn’t miss if he actually appeared
Appearances: 3 (22 short films about Springfield, The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson, The Simpsons Guide to Springfield)

4. Database

Database is the biggest nerd of Springfield Elementary. With his love for anything sci-fi, his thick glasses and his annoying nasal voice (Simpsons creator Matt Groening says he cringes everytime he hears it and that he hates the character) what else could he be. Database hangs out with the other nerds of the school in a group called “The Superfriends”. He is highly intelligent but is rarely seen outside the school or comic book store
Appearances: 13 (Bart’s Comet, The PTA Disbands, ‘Round Springfield, Lemon of Troy, The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show, The Old Man and Lisa, The Principal & The Pauper, Mayored to the Mob, Skinner’s Sense of Snow, The Bart of War, 24 Minutes, The Simpsons Movie, Homer and Lisa Exchange Cross Words)

3. Arthur Crandall & Gabbo

Arthur Crandall is a ventriloquist and with his dummy Gabbo he launches a very successful TV show. So successful that he manages to crush Krusty in the ratings getting the Krusty Show cancelled. It all seems harmless but it is soon found out that Crandall hates children (and he outs it via his dummy Gabbo, showing a severe mental disorder in Arthur Crandall’s mind.) Still Gabbo is an awesome puppet who manages to get into this list at number 3. So what have we learned, swearing puppets equal ratings!
Appearances: 3 (Krusty gets Kancelled, Bart to the Future, The Simpsons Movie)

2. Sideshow Raheem

sideshow raheem

Apart from maybe Disco Stu, it doesn’t get any cooler then Sideshow Raheem. This predecessor of Sideshow Bob and Sideshow Mel was Krusty’s sidekick during the 70’s although Krusty semmed a bit scared of him. In the Krusty the Clown 29th anniversary show Krusty is seen remarking “Angry, angry young man”
Raheem refused to get hit in the head with a hammer in one show. Later he is shown attending Krusty’s “funeral” and in the all black church. Rarely seen but a favorite too many!
Appearances: 3 (I love Lisa, Bart the Fink, Milhouse of Sand and Fog)

1. Duffman

Duffman, oh yeah!
Duffman is the best of the rarely seen Simpsons characters basically because he is the coolest Beer mascot you’ve ever seen. B eing portrayed by a number of people over the years Duffman always keeps his cool and thrust his pelvis whenever he finds the time to do it. Duffman always refers to himself in the third person and describes his actions while doing stuff. “Duffman can never die! Only the actors who play him!”
Appearances: 13 (The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson, The Frying Game, Comic Fan No More, Marge and Homer turn a Couple Play, Homerazzi, Hungry Hungry Homer, Old Yeller Belly, He loves to Fly and he D´ohs, Eternal Moonshine of the Simpsons Mind, Pygmoelian, The Great Louse Detective, Jaws Wired Shut, Lisa and Homer exchange Cross Words.’

Musical Tuesday – Music Tips for the Wicked

September 1, 2009 at 1:02 pm (Musical Tuesday, Themed Tuesday)

Welcome to Musical Tuesday!

Every once in a while I will use musical tuesday to vent my opinion of music and hopefully give you, the audience, some usefull tips of what you could be listening to right now!

Today 3 great bands get the spotlight, we’ll begin with:

Silversun Pickups
Silversun Pickups is a great band from Los Angeles, CA. Their style can best be compared to The Smashing Pumpkins but is also has some of the characteristics of Placebo (with who they are touring with as support act!) and The Velvet Underground. Their latest album Swoon is a nice trip trough the world of Rock and Roll as it mixes hard and powerful guitar riffs with sensitive singing and thomping basslines. A must-listen for fans of early (pre-Nirvana) grunge and alternative.

Them Crooked Vultures
What a line-up, seriously! If you got a band with Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) it’s not hard to understand why you should definitely listen to this band. The music is best described as Queens of the Stone Age on Acid (if that’s not the case already) and is also known as 8436 2766533 88588737. A must-listen for any self respecting rock fan

Dizzee Rascall
Currently getting very well known with his hit single Bonkers but his other stuff is also worth a listen. I’m putting Dizzee in here because of the awesome show he gave at Lowlands Festival 2009 and from what I heard his perfomance at Pukkelpop was just as cool. On his new album Dizzee collaborates with some of the dance scene greatest hero’s (Calvin Harris, Armand van Helden) and it makes for a very enjoyable hip hop album. A must listen for hip hop fans and hipsters in general!

So finally my blog is online and while it isn’t anything what I would like it to be it will serve as a nice placeholder.
Currently I’m working on getting an FTP server online and finding a good host. Once that is done I will most likely move the page.

Anyway enjoy this for now I won’t expect to move the site untill after a couple of months. Don’t forget to bookmark!
