De Staat

de staat
De Staat (Dutch for “The State”) has made their mark on the musical year of 2009. Playing almost everywhere in the Netherlands including the festivals of Pinkpop and Lowlands. Internationally they could be on the verge of a breakthrough as well, recently playing the Sziget festival in Hungary and next year they will play the Glastonbury festival.
De Staat plays a raw edged alternative style similar to that of bands like Queens of the stone Age and Dinosaur Jr. with a touch of poppy awareness. A great band overall!

Elle Bandita

ella bandita
Elle Bandita is Britney Spears in a backwards universe. This rockchick from The Hague screams, sings, shouts and plays the guitar like she is stark raving mad, but it works and the amazing post-grunge style she and her band perform puts a smile on your face. Singer Elle was discovered by Golden Earring frontman Barry Hay and was originally in the band Bad Candy. With the Ella Bandita project she finally got some mainstream attention in the Netherlands and hopefully will be an international success as well.

Drive Like Maria

drive like maria
Drive Like Maria is a Dutch/Belgian band that already got some international attention. The band came in second at the Global Battle of the Bands in Mexico and played as a support act for ZZ Top and AC/DC. The music can best be described as Stonerrock. Drive Like Maria is an energetic band so if you have the chance to check them out make sure to do so. You won’t regret it!

Stud Muffins

Stud Muffins 3
The Stud Muffins hold a special place in my heart. I have seen their first ever gig and know some of the band members personally. Now I now a lot of bands personally but Stud Muffins wouldn’t be on this list if they weren’t very good as well. The band plays a poppy rock style and charms the audience at every show with their fresh performance. Besides being nice guys the band has a feel for catchy tunes and it’s only a matter of time until they hit the charts. Let it Burn!

The Death Letters

Listen to their songs and close your eyes. Now think of the fact that this band consists of only two musicians who aren’t even 18 years old. Pretty impressive ey? The Death Letters is the revelation of 2009 for Dutch rock and alternative aficionados. The two teenagers show a tremendous understanding of classic hard rock and blues while still maintaining their own style. The Netherlands has been conquered, Europe is next and North America can’t be too far behind.
